Donations policy
Last updated: 29 July 2026
No Room for Racism is a campaign run by Common Threads. This policy explains where your donation goes, what it pays for, what we will not accept, and how to change, pause or get your money back.
The short version: donations over $2 are tax deductible, we are after small amounts from lots of people rather than large amounts from a few, and if you want a refund you email us and we give you one.
Who receives the money
Donations made through this site are received by Common Threads and used for the No Room for Racism campaign. Payments are processed by Stripe, in Australian dollars.
Tax deductibility
Donations over $2 are tax deductible. Your tax receipt is issued by Common Threads Indigenous Peoples Organisation Ltd (ABN 43 687 271 227), which is the entity that receives and banks the money.
You will get an emailed receipt straight after you donate. Keep it for your records and for your tax return.
If you are unsure whether to claim a particular donation, ask your accountant rather than us – we can tell you what we issued and to whom, but we cannot give you tax advice.
What your money pays for
- Printing. Posters, stickers and signs for shop windows, front yards and street poles across Victoria.
- Organisers on the ground in the suburbs and towns being targeted.
- Rapid response, so that when a candidate runs a racist line in the media there is an answer the same day.
- Community events, doorknocks and training for volunteers.
- The website, the poster generator and the tools that hold the campaign together.
- A modest share of the cost of running Common Threads, because the campaign uses its staff, insurance and systems.
Small-dollar fundraising, and what we will not take
This campaign is built to run on small donations from individuals. That is a deliberate choice, not a fallback, and these are the rules we hold ourselves to:
- No money with strings. We will not accept a donation from anyone who expects a say in what the campaign says, who it criticises, or where it organises. If a donation arrives with conditions attached, we return it.
- Nothing on someone else's behalf. Donate your own money in your own name. We do not accept a donation made on behalf of an undisclosed third party.
- No donations from political parties or candidates. This is an independent community campaign and it needs to stay one.
- Donor names are not published. We do not publish a donor list on this site and we do not read out who gave what.
- Minimum donation is $5. Below that the card fee eats most of it.
- Maximum donation is under $5,000. We can only accept donations from Australian citizens, residents or entities of under $5,000 for political expenditure. The donation form enforces this: a payment of $5,000 or more is refused rather than taken and refunded later. If you want to give more than that, email info@commonthreads.org.au and we will talk it through properly.
- Australian citizens and residents only. You confirm this when you donate, and it is stated on the form above the button rather than after it.
You can add 2% at the checkout to cover the card processing fee, so the campaign keeps the full amount you intended to give. It is optional and you can turn it off. The 2% counts towards the $5,000 cap, because it is part of what is charged to your card.
Regular donations
If you choose a monthly donation, the same amount is charged to the same card each month, on the same date, until you tell us to stop.
You can change the amount, pause it, or cancel it at any time. Email info@commonthreads.org.au with the email address you used to donate and tell us what you want to happen. We will action it before your next charge and confirm by email once it is done.
Cancelling stops all future payments. It does not claw back payments already taken, though you can ask for a refund of a recent one under the section below.
If a monthly payment fails, Stripe will retry it. If it keeps failing we will email you rather than keep retrying quietly in the background.
Refunds
If you made a mistake, gave the wrong amount, or have simply changed your mind, email info@commonthreads.org.au within 30 days and we will refund you in full. We will not ask you to justify it.
After 30 days, still ask. We will look at it and we will usually say yes.
Refunds go back to the card you paid with. Stripe takes 5 to 10 business days to return the money to your account, which is their timeline and not something we can speed up.
If you see a charge from us that you did not authorise, email us before you call your bank. We can stop any further charges immediately and refund the one you are querying, which is faster than a chargeback and costs the campaign less.
What happens to your details
To take a donation we pass your name and email address to Stripe, and we add you to our supporter database in Action Network so we can send your receipt and tell you what your money paid for. Your card details go straight from your browser to Stripe and are never stored by us.
The full picture is in our privacy policy, including how to get a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, or get off the email list. Donating does not lock you into the emails.
Donation records are kept for at least seven years to meet Australian financial record-keeping requirements. That is the one thing we cannot delete on request.
Accountability
Donation income is tracked against this campaign, reconciled monthly against the Stripe account, and reported to the people responsible for Common Threads' finances.
Questions about a donation
Email info@commonthreads.org.au. Include the date and amount of the donation and the email address you used, and we will find it.
Do not send us your card number, and do not send it to anyone who asks for it in our name. We will never ask you for full card details by email.
