Bring people to something

The single most useful thing you can do is turn up with one other person. Community days, doorknocks and rallies are listed as they are confirmed.

What to say

You will not win an argument by being the most informed person in the room. You will get somewhere by taking the worry seriously and then pointing at who is actually causing it.

  • “We should look after our own first.”

Fair enough that people are struggling – that part is real. But who is actually taking the money? Rents and grocery prices went up while profits hit records. Blaming your neighbour has not made a single bill smaller.

  • “I am not racist, but there are too many people coming in.”

The thing squeezing housing is not migration, it is that we stopped building public housing forty years ago. Ask who benefits from you being angry at people rather than at that.

  • “Why do they get special treatment?”

Treaty is not special treatment, it is an agreement about who makes decisions – the same thing anyone wants for their own family. It took a decade and thousands of First Nations Victorians to build.

  • “It is just political correctness.”

Forty-five per cent of Victorians have witnessed or experienced racism, and among younger people it is a majority. That is not a language problem, it is people being made unsafe.
